JATER.TXT from Doug St George, 10 Racecourse Rd, Whitianga 3510, NZ. I would appreciate any info on the JATER family of Byfleet, Surrey, England between 1750 to 1880. My Gt-Grandfather William Montgomery JATER joined the 70th East Surrey Regiment 20 Nov 1849 (WO12/1820) and arrived New Zealand 1861, changing his name to ST GEORGE upon marriage in 1868 to Emily Jane STEWART (or STUART) at Mangawhai, NZ. He received the Indian Mutiny Medal as Sgt William James M. JATER but left the army as a Private. He spent 9 months in gaol for theft in 1867 with his friend John Wallis, a signatory on his wedding certificate. Then William and Emily ST GEORGE went to Grahamstown (now Thames)in gold rush times, where John Wallis was killed in a fracas at a boardinghouse 18 July 1870. Their first child, Margaret, was born in 1870 in Grahamstown. His marriage certificate lists his year of birth as 1833, Byfleet, Surrey. Sarah 1850 Chertsey, Surrey James Jater 1849 Chertsey, Surrey ------------------------------------------------------- If anyone can confirm the origins of William (James) Montgomery JATER b 1833 Byfleet Surrey I would be delighted to hear from you. I have extensive records of his family in New Zealand under surname ST GEORGE and also a lot on the STEWART family of Manchester ca 1846. In 2016 I took a Y-37 DNA test and have 5 matches to JETERs, all I think are in USA. This probably means that I have a match back to John Jeter 1686-1736, born in Suffolk ENG, he died in Caroline Co. Virginia and had two wives with 11 children each. I also have one VAN METER match which indicates that I may have connections to the town of Meteren, near Utrecht, Holland. The DNA matches I have emailed all say they are descended from slaves, who inherited the Jeter surname and DNA from one of the Jeter plantation owners in the 1800s. I have no known ancestors in the USA, I think my Jaters probably went to Surrey around the 1700s, possibly first from Holland. Name variants include TETER, TEATOR, TEETER, FETTER, DIETER, JATER, GEATOR, JETER (Y-DNA testing is only passed on father to son, so matches are in the paternal line).
